From Fragmented Efforts to Continental Power: NIDO Africa Gives Women a Platform
_Continental Body Moves to Tackle Financing, Trade and Welfare Challenges Facing Nigerian Women Across Africa_
The Nigerian in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Africa has formally inaugurated its Women’s League, a new continental structure designed to boost the participation of Nigerian women in leadership, business, policy advocacy and community development across Africa.
- The League was unveiled on Saturday during NIDO Africa’s Leadership Celebration and Award Ceremony. Speaking virtually with journalists after the event, the Continental Chairman, Dr. Fatoye Olufemi, said the initiative was born out of the immense but fragmented contributions of Nigerian women to entrepreneurship, family welfare, community support and cultural preservation in the diaspora.
“Nigerian women have been central to our communities abroad, but their efforts have lacked a dedicated institutional framework. Given today’s economic realities, they must move beyond passive participation and take active roles in economic initiatives and decision-making,” Dr. Fatoye said.
*What The Women’s League Will Do*
According to him, the League will operate on five strategic pillars: unity and bridge-building, economic and community impact, policy advocacy, mentorship and empowerment, and cultural diplomacy.
Its key mandates include:
*1. Institutional Inclusion:* Ensuring full representation of women in leadership and policy processes across all NIDO Africa chapters.
*2. Economic Empowerment:* Launching the NIDO Diaspora Women’s Business Network to promote peer-to-peer trade, micro-investments, skills development and access to credit and business financing.
*3. Legal and Social Support:* Collaborating with legal bodies, civil society organisations and diplomatic missions to provide legal aid, rights education and advocacy against discrimination, work-permit restrictions and language barriers.
*4. Family Welfare:* Setting up localised support committees to provide emergency assistance, health guidance, educational placement for children and psychosocial support for isolated families.
*5. Diaspora-to-Home Linkage:* Creating structured mentorship between diaspora professionals and women-led businesses, students and entrepreneurs in Nigeria, in addition to a diaspora-to-home trade corridor that will connect women farmers, artisans and manufacturers in Nigeria to markets across Africa.
Dr. Fatoye also announced plans to channel diaspora resources into maternal health, girl-child education and digital literacy in underserved communities in Nigeria, as well as joint policy dialogues between female leaders at home and abroad.
*3-Year Roadmap*
The Continental Chairman unveiled a three-year vision to transform the League into a functional continental network with measurable economic impact. The roadmap includes establishing active Women’s League directorates in all registered chapters, creating a NIDO Africa Women Development Fund for seed grants and SME loans, positioning Nigerian women to benefit from the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and becoming a recognised voice on women, migration and development at the African Union, ECOWAS and national governments.
He stressed that the League was not created to compete with men, but to complement existing structures and harness the leadership, intellect and problem-solving capacity of Nigerian women across Africa.
“This is a historic transition. We are harnessing the leadership, intellect and problem-solving capacity of Nigerian women to heal divisions and project Nigeria’s positive image across the continent,” he said.
*Honours and Tributes*
At the ceremony, NIDO Africa honoured its past continental leaders: Late Dr. Babatunde Lee (2001-2014), Dr. Kingsman Chikelu (2016-2022) and Ambassador Titus Alagba (2023-2026).
Dr. Fatoye also commended the founding leaders of the Women’s League, including Hon. Mary Olukemi Owolabi, Hon. Dr. Olamma Ojukwu, Hon. Jennifer Annie Koko Conteh, Hon. Nkechi Joyce Arizor, Hon. Olufunke Amu, Hon. Adesuwa Balogun, Hon. Anna Edem, Hon. Adepeju Kafilat Bello and Hon. Chinyere K. Nwabudike.
He expressed confidence that the initiative would strengthen NIDO Africa’s capacity to unite Nigerians across Africa and contribute to socio-economic development both in the diaspora and at home.
